Looking for a new car

I currently have a mk3 gt and want to buy a mk4 was thinking about a 1.4 or a 1.4 16 valve. How much do these go for only want to spend up to about £2000. Also what are they like speed wise are they quick or not. All help appreciated.

go for 16v if u can afford it. as it has 100bhp compared to the 1.4 8v's 60bhp. however 60bhp is quite punchy! it can beat saxo 1.4s! :lol: :lol:

I've got a "R" 1.4 8V CL 6n and a "E" 1.3 Coupe S MKII - hopefully I'll sell it soon as it's taking up space on the drive...... I bought the 6n to replace it.

The MKII is quicker everywhere - but it's a lot noisier and has a much harder ride and doesn't roll at all........ I'm surprised by that (performance) as it's giving away 100cc and it's carb v inj - I didn't drive any 16v's as I bought my 6n on price (limited budget for a 6th car but it had to be on an R plate - other halfs personal plate was on retention) rather than performance considerations. I still think the 6n is a bit asmatic an reluctant to rev where at the MKII revs and pulls like a train - fuel consumption is very similar too which makes me fell the 6n is wasting it rather than using it.

6n 1.4 8V will be well inside your price range but you might struggle to find a 16v for that sort of money but I didn't look that hard.......

in my experience it's always best not to go for the cheapest car you can find - and for 2k I think you'll be right at the bottom "thrashed and abused" range of 16v's (if you can find one at all).

Go for the 8v - great to run, fairly quick (once you let it breath and rev more freely) and easy to sell. They do run out of puff easily once the revs get high - but they are a darn good motorway cruiser.

OK so now I'm interested in that - whats required to make it breathe and rev more freely. I'm pretty sure mine wants to rev and it's certainly smooth enough - just asmatic..........

I can't seem to find any info on chipping, I've always K&N panel filtered my cars and that normally helps a bit (not a huge fan of WHAAARP induction kits) and I haven't seen much info yet on exhausts that do any good at all - lots of back boxes tho :lol:

Plugs and leads help, so does de-coking the butterfly inlet, a good filter will do the job so long as it doesn't mess up the mapping.

exhausts - not sure.

the 8v engine always seems to lose it at about 4 - 4500 rpm. someone here in the forum redlines em all the time (forget the username) so they must have some better info than me!

Got new plugs in it and leads seem fine, certainly no hint of a missfire anyway - I'll check the butterfly out - K&N panel filter doesn't normally mess up the maps - most panel filters don't because you retain the std airbox - induction kits are likely to cause more problems in mapping

What you have described with your 8v seems very similar to mine - sure it revs but makes hard work of it IMHO (esp for an engine which is supposed to produce peak bhp at 4700rpm - peak torque at 3000 rpm I can believe.........

It will rev to the red but basically it's waste of time - it seems to respond better to short shifting and rolling along with the torque.

So it seems mine is quite typical, based on a straw poll of 2!!!

i have seen a 16 valve for 2000 on auto trader quite high miles but the the engine should last for ages. The 1.4 shouldn't beat a saxo 1.4 as even the 1.1 has a better time, don't know where you are getting those stats from.
0-60 from 8 valve 15 seconds
0-60 from 1.1 saxo 13 seconds

after 60mph the polo still pulls strong, while saxo struggles behind... :lol: :lol:

ive done 0-60mph in 13.5seconds, with 3ppl on board.... in my 1.4 CL :D
