Parts swappable between models?

Yeah its me with the bloody gearboxes again :D

What I would like to find out... are the gearboxes used in the Polo specific to the model, or are the same parts, or different ones with similar fittings, used in other cars... eg Golf, Jetta, Bora, whatever. Specifically anything that would wedge comfortably into a Mk3.

Going off scrappy-hopping in the next 2-3 days so would like to know how limited my search criteria have to be. Any dealer that's junked an 81 thru 99 VW or Audi of any description, with mid 90s Skodas and Seats to boot, or is it locked to Mk2* and Mk3 Polos and nothing else?

(* I already know a mk2 would fit... hopefully some Golf ones, even if they have to be 80s, should fit, as the older CLs shared the original 1.05/1.1/1.3 engines (and got laughed at for it ))

Cheers..

Edit: no replies, so i've added a poll, considering that got much the more response in the clutch cost question. easier to point and click than type anything :)

cmon... anyone.... 14 views and no votes  either get the mods to zap my post or do something

(been in touch with a couple local dealers who may be turning up trumps, and one - just the one - nationwide via Breakerlink... may be able to give a clue myself via that as the guy on the other end of the phone had the impression i was looking for a 'VW or audi box'..)

Ouch.

One quote at £100 plus £20 delivery, no mention of mounts or linkage.

Another at £176 including tax and delivery, mounts and link. (What? It has different mounts? Thanks for telling me, garage guy... unless this supplier's trying to take me for a ride)

(note: both had to deliver as no-one round my way had anything.. damnit)

Screw that! :D I'll put this imaginary saving towards a different polo with the 'box present from the factory.... already paying £180 for the clutch - The £400 or so the whole thing might cost could net me a whole high-milage car from a pliable seller. (take the old girl to mr cowboy clutch for a £80 replacement, spend a day sorting out the seats and the paint, sell on to a recent passer)

PS Another thing that I never realised or didnt think important - a 1 litre box won't fit a 1.3 and vice versa? Damn it all... is that true? (I was just going by haynes and stories of people doing engine swaps that most boxes would fit most engines)

Holding out hope that some local scrappy might quote me happy for 50-60 quid in before wednesday (garage appointment)... oh well
