Can this be done? Straight swap or some modifications?

Reason being - wanting to install BMC induction kit

Quite alot of modification. The GTI engine cover bolts on with 4 bolts, whereas the normal covers use two bolts in different locations and pop on at the back. I tried to do it on mine, and ended up giving up, as it was just just too much hassle and the bonnet wouldnt close properly with it in place!

What options would I have if I was to fit a BMC?

I've seen a thread where half the engine cover was cut off, any other options?

Half the cover, a 6n one, or no engine cover - thats the choices :P

Get a spare one from a scrappy!

Is there an advantage fitting the BMC near the throttle body?

I've seen everyone do it but I was wondering if there will be an effect if I use the hoses to bring it out from under the engine cover?

As it's and an enclosed kit it shouldn't make any difference at all.The air will still get to the throttle body in the same amount of time and at the same temperature. Its different if you have a cone filter and locate that nearer the grill etc but thats only done because they are very rarely used in conjunction with a cold air feed.

I'd keep it near the throttle body and run decent air feed to it,it means you can secure it properly then using the bracket supplied.

have you noticed that induction kits make the engine smell oily?

Thats due to the position of your crankcase breather filter - if you pipe it out the way or use a catch tank itll disappear.

As above,i'd reccomend a catch tank for sure.Does exactly what it says on the tin and keeps things alot cleaner underneath the engine bay.
