Hi all, just taken delivery of our new Polo 1.6TDI 75ps 5 door in red. Great car even though it took 6 months instead of 6 weeks as the dealer stated. As you probably all know, it had to come from South Africa and the boat wouldn't sail until it was full. Can't fault the car at all, we love it, well worth the wait. The only issue I have is the lights. The dealership want nothing to do with it as they say their hands are tied by VW. The book states that there are two types of daytime lights, daytime running lights (two dim main beam bulbs only) and daytime driving lights (all lights on with dipped beam). The book clearly states how to switch between the two but this proceedure does not work and we are left with all our lights on while the engine is running. VW state that this is a printing error (two full pages). Apart from the obvious issues like higher fuel consumption and a higher rate of bulb failure, there are other issues such as other motorists thinking you are flashing them out while going over speed humps. I am awaiting a reply from VW. Other new VW's such as Golf's and even Transporter van's are using the running lights option, which are far better for many reasons including them not being confused with headlights. The dealership cannot even turn the lights off as VW are saying there is a technical issue. Apart from that, great car!

My Spanish-built Polo took 5 months for delivery by train. But this was as the dealer stated.

Mine (the continental version and highly originally named "Top Line") comes with front driving/running lights. These come on with the ignition. They are down low in the front skirt next to the fog lights and can only be turned off by switching the lights ON(!). Left is off and driving lights only. Middle position is parking lights - driving lights off, right is headlights, pull out for front fogs, out again for rear fog.

Oddly when these front driving lights are on, there are no rear lights on.

I am used to driving with headlights on all the time (and don't worry about what people may think on speed bumps). Here (Switzerland) about 80% of vehicles drive with headlights on in the day. It is 'recommended' by the government and could soon be compulsory.

Looks like depending where it is made depends on what light configuration you get then.

Would seem so. Reading the manual, I see there are two ways to switch of the driving/running lights:

1) Remove the fuse.
2) Hold the indicator stalk down and push it away from you and hold it for 3 seconds. Doing this again will restore the lights.

I rather feel this applies only to Polos with separate driving/running lights. I will leave mine as I like to drive with them or headlights and feel the running lights may save bulbs. In 10 years with a Golf 4 I had to replace about 6 headlight bulbs...

Tried both methods, there is no fuse (56) and the indicator option does not work. Looking at other forums, the only way to alter the lighting configuration is to plug the car into the VAG COM software (around £300), the VW dealership will not do it. Looks like I am stuck with all the lights on all of the time, unless of course I find a garage with VAG COM that are willing to perform the operation.
