This might be a foolish question but I am actually doubting my Polo GTI would actually keep up with one of these??????

I mean one of my mate has a Saxo VTR and he tried to race me well wasn't a proper race as he was ahead of me and my dad on the wheels (he wasn't trying to race either) and he took off first on a hill but the way he sped off really made me think twice even though it was only a VTR not the daddy VTS.....

So the question is, are GTI's really slower than the Saxo s**t's????????

hmm.... the throttle pedal is on the right!!!!

there must be something wrong if your polo cant beat a vtr? the vts is 120bhp so the vtr is less? your polo is 150 standard so something is a miss!

Using maths:
The GTi puts out 150bhp. Assuming it weighs 1164 kg (from google), this gives it a power to weight value of 129bhp/tonne.
The VTR puts out 100 bhp. Assuming it weighs 920 kg (parkers), this gives it a power to weight value of 109bhp/tonne.
For a GTi to have the same power to weight ratio as the VTR, a GTi weighing 1164kg would have to have a power output of 126.5 bhp.

To summarise: no.

As I said, it wasn't actually a race tbh! He wanted to race but my dad being behind the wheel wasn't too interested, but the way he took off made me think twice if you
know what I mean?

I just bought the gti last week which a years warranty and dont think anythings wrong well fingers crossed as its already beaten a Focus Zetec and megane

Thanks man for the detailed explanation as it really helped boost my confidence...... I have no doubt the GTI would clean slate destroy it but the video and seeing the VTR today
made me think twice lol, if you know what I mean???

I had no problems keeping up with them in my old Corsa 1.8 - Not had the pleasure to smoke one in my GTi yet but I know it would be no contest

haha Ano! I was actually pressing the throttle on the passenger side basically to the floor nehow I wont let him embarrass the GTI nemore

You will beat them easy mate! Then get a simple remap and you will be up against Type R's then stage 2 and you taking Focus ST 500's Meagane Sports, VXR's etc! Great fun

depends on who's driving.
most of the people driving such cars don't know how to drive it proper!
they are light cars and they are truly fast, so don't underestimate them
from roling start, the polo will take the lead for a bit.
but in high RPM the polo better watch out
polo start spulling from 2000 - 5500RPM, after that, they are pretty much dead...
VTS start pulling decent from over 3500 - 4000RPM, they really come to life.
so it's hard to compare...

a friend of mine has recently bought a Pugeot 106 GTI. (exacly the same as Saxo VTS)
put it on dyno and it had 135Hp~165nM.
it has exhaust and airfilter only wich are verry good results!
and i truly can tell you it's verry verry fast!!
couple of times he has raced my polo. (i have 170Hp~255nM)
and i must say, i know how to drive and launch decent with it, but so does he with his 106!
0-100km we go neck on neck, but once after that at higher speed he start to pull away.
specially at high RPM.
about the same as the one in the video.
also from rolling start we go side by side, and once above 4000RPM i must slightly let him go.
i recon he does 14.7 - 14.9 on 1/4 mile.
my polo on the other hand won't go under 15sec flat.

also, a Civic Type R is slower most of the time allready
and like sead above, remap a polo and a VTS is no match at all

it's not allways the one with the best power to weight ratio that wins the race.
it also comes down to gearing etc

My 1.9 TDI sport (remaped and straight through zorst) wipes the floor with saxo vtrs / vts, so you guys really shoudlnt have a problem. lol

like i said, if you have a person who knows how to drive a VTS... you will be surprised
also, most of them (not all) are allready at age and have seen a few owners.
so it's the same story as the Honda CRX, most of them won't go how they used to go anymore...
i have raced VTS and Pug GTi's before that i beat easy.
but if i'm honest, they guys inside diddn't know what they were doing

what are youre 1/4mile times? 0-60?
did you run against it from rolling start? if so, you will win from it no doubt about it

Not to sure what 1/4 mile is mate, never really had it on a track or timed it. Cars such as Golf 2.0 TDI's (standard) are no match really. Have had many runnings with C2 & saxo VTS, and just leave them in a cloud of black smoke from the lights lol. But yes, you are totally correct about the driver and mid range. Get someone who can drive and it becomes a little more of a challenge Its all good fun

'Turbomier' thanks for the confidence and making me realise that the investment wasn't after all bad.

Tbh what you said there about person behind the wheel and changing gears, all makes sense as I have only had the GTI for a less than a week
and my background has always been 1.2's so all and all still getting use to the 1.8T

I am not a bad driver or incompetent in changing gears at the right time. But changing over to 1.8Ts has been a big step atleast for me

The saxo wasn't actually racing neck to neck but the fella certainly wanted to show off his vtr and took off probably trying to get more car lengths.

I dont mean to try this on road or endanger somebodies life but what do you recommend in terms of when to change the gears so that they are effective in terms of pulling away from the french s****ts

It's all about practice really. At the moment I am actually driving a 1.2 myself. But my cousins always let me have a go of his 3.2 quattro down the country roads and on private land and that. Been playing around forabut 4-5 months now. You just need to get use to it and find out for yourself, normally I find the best RPM to shift gears is around average of 4800 - 5400. The engine noise always gives you the best clues as to when to shift. Hope this helps

driver does it all.
a "red light sprint" is also something else as an 1/4mile dragrace.
at the lights, i rarely see someone do a good launch from standing still.
on a dragrace everybody tries to do the perfect launch to be first.
if you have a good start, the race is half won allready. (not against a 500Hp corvette or so :-p)
but i can tell you, 0.5sec is a BIG difference in a dragrace or even a sprint.
i got proof enough of that

and i don't say you in person are a bad driver.
but you said it yourself, still figuring out the power from the 1.8T.
nobody expect you to drive it like you know the car for years.
like said above, practice will surely improve the skill and results
take youre time and youll see
