Turns out that my engines knackered an it needs a new one. What would be my best bet in replacing it? How much would a 1.8t conversion cost and what else would be needed. I can't really afford to spend too much on it -just spent £750 on a new clutch and box rebuild. What engine would fit and how much would I be looking? Need to get it sorted for as cheap as poss. Asap. Cheers

Define "knackered"????? you cant have totalled the entire engine?!!???

A rebuild would, I suspect be the cheapest option..

If you dia 1.8T conversion doing ALL the labour yourself it could be done for about £1000... up to about £4000+ if you pay someone else...


Worth looking at insurance costs if you want to try a different engine.... Put me right off doing a turbo conversion!

I think a 1.8t would be out the question in that case. Need to get it sorted for as cheap as poss. Took it garage, thought the valves were damaged but turns out it's more then that, an mechanic recommends a new engine. I haven't had the chance to go to the garage myself, becuase of uni commitments, so my dads been taking care of it.

Is the standard 1.6 engine the only one that goes straight in?
The mechanic reckons a rebuild will be too much due to expensive bits from dealers etc. Said the cheapest option would be to just get another engine an replace it.

Well, if the guy who wants mine doesn't get back to me then i have a gti engine sitting in my garage waiting for a home

I would suggest you speak to a different mechanic!

Someone who knows what they are talking about.... if it is just bent valves... then it may only cost £400ish to put it right...

ill deffo take your engine if its not gone mate!

As Tegwin has said,personally i would take the care elsewhere.An engine rebuild would be better that sourcing a new engine and having it fitted.

I would also try and determine what is shagged on the engine,i can't see the whole thing being "shagged" and completely useless.

i seen the mechanic today, hes a good mate of my dads and known him for a very long time so dont think he would pull a fast one, he was explaining how he thought it was the top half of the engine that was damaged when he first checked, but turns out the bottom half is damaged too, he rekons the engines had no oil in it thats why. he said sumat bout its chucking oil straight out. think he said he put a compressor or summat on it to check, i cnt even remember. think he said theres no pressure. but he goes its damaged badley.

the current engine code is ARC i think, any ideas is a AVY engine would fit and work fine without any mods?

ARC and AVY engines are pretty much the same and are more or less interchangeable..

Dont want to sound rude, but I would still be wanting the opinion of someone else... Has this mechanic friend taken the engine appart and examined it to see whats wrong?!!?? If not, then his prognosis is pure speculation...

Get the engine out of the car, get it stripped down and get it inspected...

Yeah he's taken the engine out an stripped it. He has three other mechanics working at thr same place too

Its strange that the entire engine is "shagged" but if your happy with what they say then its best to start looking for a new engine.

Might be worth getting the Lupo 6 Speed box while its out

Just make sure you put oil in the new one

yep, just need to get hold of a ARC engine now!!

If you fancy changing over the pedal box, and complete clutch mechanism to hydraulic go for it But its not easy!

Not easy?!!??? pansy boy... would take me an afternoon to do that

IUs the clutch the only difference between the two boxes then? I always thought the mount on the bellhousing was different?

Isen't the bore size on the Loop gearbox different to the polo one?
