Car Locks :S!

Hello!
Wonder if anyone can help, having a very strange problem with my 2001 Match Polo... I've noticed recently the locks have been getting stiff (all of them at the same time!) Its getting worse as it feels like the Key is pulling the lock out of the car...i couldnt even get my key in today, i had to open car on passenger side (which again is stiff). Theres nothing electrically wrong as the central locking works fine! Once when i put the key in the ignition it took ages to turn as it got stuck!! So it seems like the problem is the key... but looking at the key i cant see anything wrong with it :S and sometimes it works fine! I've noticed that in the last month the little metal lock protectector (sorry i have no idea what its called! Its the metal flap in the centre of the lock that pushes in as you put the key in) That has gone missing from my drivers door, could someone have tried to break in? and damaged my lock? which has then damaged my key? Seems bit far fetched but i have no idea! and could really use some advise before taking her to a garage
