gear shift problems

wheneveer i shift, second and fourth are seeming very stiff,
when i dip the clutch all the way to the floor and put it in reverse it also crunches especially on downhills even tryed depressing the clutch for 3-4 seconds as reccomended on another post but doesnt really help
any suggestions to the problem im thinking maybe check the gear box levels but being a car newb dont know if i could do this myself?
any help would be greatly appreciated
