Fun with vectors!

Hehe.. i got a bit bored waiting on the phone to talk to the couriers... so I vectorised an old front shot of my car (for want of a decent side one). Easy Mk3 modding with the click of a mouse!
(these are PNGs... anyone wants the original PSP vector files, or a Photoshop/WMF conversion, to play with, just changing colours or moving things around, give a buzz. These are supposedly with a transparent background, but it will only work right in netscape or opera - it looks gash in IE.... and i should know :D but at least its a small filesize with zero distortion)

Image
The basic Mk3, minus blemishes of age (and, oops, the vent grilles under the wipers :D), and plus aftermarket generic fogs. Unfortunately not minus wobbly, grotty standard seats!

Image
Dropped, wider tyres (alloys, but you cant see that :)), clear and slight tinted indicators, half body colour bumper and silver strip, modest brows. The sports seats are yet to go in, as is the anti glare sunstrip on the screen :) (cant figure out how to draw the seats, and i was lazy as regards the strip)

Image
Inspired by GT3, the TVR Tuscan...... orange and purple flip paint :)... think it looks a little limp wristed like this though!

Image
mmm, that's more like it - again the Tuscan, but the Speed 12. Dark aqua green and deep purple, sweet (but expensive i bet)... again hasnt come out quite as expected, but it'll do.

(actually in both cases there's an intermediate colour missing - burnt sienna and navy blue respectively - but i'm not quite up to speed with gradient fills in more than 2 colours yet, so it just has to go through a kind of grey instead)

any chance of a write up of how to do that in Photoshop?

Hehe. Tutorial

1. take picture of car
2. load layers and vectors capable paint program
3. put picture as bottom layer
4. make a vector layer on top and trace (i find using point-to-point lines is the easiest, and you can avoid them looking "playstationy" if you use a large number of clicks on the corners). for filled areas its best to make the vector join up (consult the help file :D)
5. muck about with it!

Petri if you liked that, i've got other things you'll like, unfortunately i need to scan at least one of them and the scanner's giving me hell :(

(this scan was got mere microseconds before my scanner decided to hurl itself on the floor with no prompting whatsoever, probably totally destroying the scan head  )

Excellent! I was going to name them all but then I saw the cheat page!

I guess the thing would be to try and guess the missing item! I have the same keyring set at home!

I'm sure it's a green Totoro or something..

:D Sounds like fun... But the best results are achieved with darker cars. :(

Anyway what did you use, Photoshop? CorelTRACE/DRAW?

Cheers

I've just checked mine and I have a Green Totoro. The missing item must be Jiji!!

awww! you mean you have to draw it yourself? I was hoping it would just be a button in photoshop that would just do it all for you.

it looks like it'd take ages to trace through the whole picture!

 LOL @ Petri
you mean you have the same keychain set? :) You're right, I gave the Jiji one (very cute) to my nan as part of her birthday presents. She isn't a witch but has a thing for black (stuffed) cats...
(I would have preferred they make an 8 item one with a nausicaa figure and a laputa robot, but oh well..... things appen. plus im not made of cash, this was expensive enough. Also would have preffered that yakkuls reins didnt keep slipping off his nose :p)

Haysey/pettsy - yeah i was bored.... i've done it before with other things (including turning very low res cartoon scans off the net into something suitable for an A4 print) and decided to have a go with the car as i couldnt immediately find any material suitable for modding the actual photo with. If I had more time I might have included the background (a rather spiffing bit of welsh mountainside) as well...
I think the older versions of Coreldraw (maybe the new ones too?) had that capability - remember testing it out on a 386 at school!

Babe Ruthless... yeah... i guess I'm the one who's forgotten to turn the monitor brightness up before photoshopping this time. I'm currently on my dads laptop and boy do those flip painted cars look washed out (not to mention thats nowhere near a dark enough blue for my own!)

Laters... i've now got to cover 180 miles in 3 hours from bournemouth to brum on a bank holiday friday evening - wish me luck :D

(PS I dont make a habit of collecting keychains, but im forever losing my keys, and i just came across these while ordering something else... all i had before was the M+S keyfinder, the fish, and that old "mistakes/disasters" thing from about 1988... and was forever losing keys! much brighter and more findy now)

Hehe just in the other direction, making far better time.... til you got off the M4! Fraid I didn't pay too much attention to what was coming the other way - this trip needed a lot of concentration... Ever played a computer game and gone into "the zone"? It was kind of like that  Which I guess isn't exactly the best thing that can happen on motorway....
(My brain finally clicked out of that about half an hour into work - went from being hyped up but totally useless at doing drinks (my hands wouldn't get out of "wheel & stick" mode), into tired & forgetful but properly coordinated barman in a matter of seconds)

For the record - a rather dismal 65mph average speed, but an even more dismal 35mpg! Thats what comes of locking down the throttle for 60 miles (over some hills that are b*stard steep on the climbing side and very gentle on the descent  ) and then sitting in a 12mph queue of traffic for a quarter hour. Twice. Made it in 2h 40m though, so had just enough time to get changed and shave on-site :)

Um. Now. Where was I.... errr... yes... a picture or something. Back in an hour or two :)

Garn. Now, what I was trying to do, was make an AniGIF of the minute-or-so-long bit where we are intro'd both to Kuroku, and an army of the white ones. But that obviously presented itself to take far too long after I'd got a little way, and also was going to be heeeaaauge.

So instead I just took the core bits, trimmed them down and whacked them on imageshack ;) I'm quite impressed at myself (i know, pride is a sin and all that) at cropping to exactly how much is needed without shrinking the stuff too much, and removing all the 'dead' frames...

Image Image Image Image
Ashi-taka "oing" loop : long kodama/kuroku loop : nice, seamless kodama loop (good for a board avatar) : less than seamless kuroku loop.... bu-bu-bu-bu-bu....

:P think of it as some kind of stupid birthday present even though i dont even know if you have one let alone when. it allowed me to geek out into the computer/anime side for a while instead of the car one :D

PS my totoro is green too - the scanner seems to turn any light green cloth material into an odd brown (tried it with some other things before :))... dont know why but very annoying. Also don't know why sun arrow did such a nice job of the other figures but couldn't find any 'slate grey' material for the big guy. It's all officially licensed after all, unlike some multi-hued korean knock offs..

EDIT: LOL at board censoring the main character's name (A5hitaka)..... thats one dodgy filter there, good job i didn't use it for the image title! what if i try to say c**t? (if it worked, that's "scu|\|thorpe"). Also non-lol at internet explorer hashing up the shaky-head and chattering teeth motions - they looked superfaberoonie in Paintshop Anim editor... if it looks dog rough, download it and try a different prog, like media player :D

heheh.. I forgot which thread this was in, something to do with Vectors... but that's wikked! It's the same moment I 'borrowed' for the logo, and redrew it about 37 times until it looked a bit better.

Kodamas Rule!

Yeah, we went down to poole, via Glastonbury in the end. and broke down aout 10 mins away, (I'm sure I've just posted this somewhere else)
Then had to get the AA to take us back to cardiff. The next day we drove down in my car, did our business in Poole then stayed in Bournemouth. Havn't been there for about 4 years. They still do a nice curry. And managed to buy a coffee table in Boscome?Boscombe? however you spell it.
