Key Question -

Hey First Post - soz cudnt find an intro forum (prob didnt look hard enough)

Been driving VW for last 10 years and its true once u try one u never want anything else!

Just this week upgraded from my old but loyal Mk4 Polo to a light blue Mk5 Match its lovely. Only had 1.4L model before so had no luxuries like power steering, elec windows, central locking so the new one is gonna be like a porche to me!

anyway my first and prob not last question is

the keys for my new car are a bit worn. My key is just your standard looking vdub key but the little embellum in the middle is a button, i can see a little bulb so i assume when this worked it turned on the little bulb to help you find keyhole (so thoughtful Vdub) anyhoo was wondering if its poss to get replacements of these, not just the bulb as the button is a bit tattered. Can you buy the whole thing and just pop your key into it?? cud be stupid question as Im not sure how they are held in as havent opened it up yet but if anyone knows that would be nice. or do i just buy new bulb and new elbellum and take it to bits - if this is the option is it easy to put back together :O)

Hi!
with the old SE i used to have the same key as you. and for me the little light wouldnt work either.
the key fob basically cracks open in half (i used to open it with my VW key ring lol)
by memory there was a little metal coil (flat sort of spring) and a roundish metal plate, a battery, and bulb. they all looked a bit worn out.

if you take the key apart it is all pretty simple. the button comes out.
and if you like you can take the emblem off (its just a little sticker) and replace it

Makes such a big defference in the appearance of the key :)

I only ever searched for the bulbs in Halfords as they have quite a range. but gave up once i couldnt find the right one (maybe a bigger store tho?) as I wasnt sure if this was even the problem (as i said the inside bits looked really warn out)

and the rest of the bits just sit inside the the little bulb just sits in its little round groove.
so all pretty easy to take apart and put back together
...

as far as i know you can still buy the those sorts of key fobs new from VW.
And they also popped up on eBay every once in a while. Generally around £15 i think :s
I always intended to buy one but when ever they popped up on the net I had no money, or more inmoprtant things to buy :(

With my car and key i didnt need to worry about chips and such, as far as i can remember it was the nice and simple job of taking the old key out and putting it in the new case.
but it might be different if you have an immobilizer

Hope this helps thin some way!

thanks for the replies peeps!
Managed to get bulb from local VW dealership they actually had them in stock - you were right it was pennies, £1.58 to be exact! lol
Ordered the battery from ebay.

only thing is the button which is worn, i know yuo mentioned the stickers you can buy but the button I have seems to be a complete part as you can see the metal showing through under worn logo so i dont think it is one of these stickers originally and not sure how great they would sit on top. has anyone used these?

Dealer doesnt have the buttons in stock and said only option wud be to get new key, not really worth it for cosmetic reasons! lets hope it at least works with bulb and battery - might just had to accept it wont look new

if its the same key i had its deff a sticker. its a little hard petal one. when taking my old one off i managed to slice my finger on it a good three times as i bent up a corner and struggled to pull the rest off lol.

the ones on ebay are to a little metal sticker too and are of a good quality

it is a bit trickey and I found it a lot easier doing it on my SE key as the button came out so it was easier to get a blade underneath and bend it up, and pull it off.
Rather then on my GTI remote central locking key which i was terrified of scratching if i slipped as the badge is stuck to the attual fob.

ive just arrived from VW to get a replacement after loosing my only working key with a transponder and i did ask the guy for you he said that they can be ordered into vw for a couple of quid but its quicker and easier to go on ebay as verity said but there a few different sizes as my vw flip key and my normal SE key have diff size metal plate stickers the SE one being slightly larger.

thanks for checking red6n2 while you were in.
I've got my light working, changed the battery and bulb for nice new ones. I'll have another look on ebay for the sticker and make sure its the bigger style i go for!
cheers
