Hi all I have recently bought a ‘99 1.4 16v Polo with 81,000 miles and have a few questions I was hoping you could help me out with?

I want to check/replace the gearbox oil is there an inspection hole somewhere so I can check the level? Is it an easy job to replace the oil as I don’t have access to a ramp?

The passenger side electric window does not work. Power seems to be going to it as the engine note lowers when the switch is pressed but nothing happens. Is there a fuse I could replace or could it be the motor?

The heated door mirrors don’t work, they adjust fine but don’t heat up. Any ideas?

regarding the gearbox oil, you can measure it, once your under the car look at the front of the transmission housing clean all the mess off the area, they should be a filler/level plug where a 17mm hex adaptor can fit in, (normally fairly tight) once it out if you just squeeze the oil can until you start to see the oil coming out ( so that it will be full) stop and put the plug back in and theiryou go!

regarding the window its best to take the door panel off to see if anything has come loose as it might not be an electirc fault if the engine notelowers

and for thedoor mirrors id check out the fuses then make sure all the connections are correct and make sure all earths are wired to designated areas.

Cheers lorne I'm having my friend give the car a service tomorrow as he has access to a ramp and he's going to replace the gearbox fluid. Do you happen to know which fuse it is for the door mirrors? I don't have an owners manual so can't check.

putting the car on a ramp for a service? new one to me normally do it on road! and do you not have a big sticker with the list on the fuse box cover? f24 10a is what it says in the book which should the one on the end on the right hand side!

I think it'll be easier replacing the gearbox oil on a ramp so I'll let him do it. It's got a slight blow on the exhaust so I need to look at that also. I'll have a look at the fuse box tomorrow hopefully it's just a blown fuse!
