key fobs not working

Neither of my key fobs operate the alarm or open/close the doors!
I think its not the batteries as both keys have done it at the same time.
The problem started out as intermittent when parked at work, but now the remote locking has given up completely!
I've been parking under major power lines and my mate who has a BMW has also had the same problem of intermittent operation so I guess this is the cause... (something to do with electromagnetic radiation interferance)
I read in the manual that the key fobs and car can become un-synchronised if the button is pressed a lot of times out of range so it's possible that this has happened.... but why would it happen to both keys ??
anyone else ever had this problem? and more to the point how much do you think a dealer will try to stich me up on this one?!?!
