Steering Column spline adapter

Hi people,
Hopefully it's nice and simple, I belive the spline adapter can be pulled off leaving the small spline so an older wheel or boss can go on.
Behind the adapter is a spring will this stay where it is or will it come off with the adapter? What is the spring for?
