Buying advice

Hi guys, basically I'm new to all the VW stuff as I've always had Subaru's and Landy's in the past (I like 4wd it seems!). I'm looking at 1.4L pre facelift mk3's for my girlfriend for her first car. I've already test drove a couple, one of which turned out to be knackered. The other had some rust towards the front of the rear wheel arches, that and the passengers lock barrel was missing, but it still locked alright from the inside and the central locking. Is it worth getting this to fix the rust and lock barrel or should I move on?
Also, does anyone have any general buying advice specific to polos?
