Lights turn on when stereo is connected! URGENT

Hi i am selling my car and have put a old sony cd player into the stereo place. i have used a wiring adapter to do this.
The stereo when turned on turns the dashboard lights on, and all other interior lights (as if sidelights or mainbeam were on) but it does this even if the headlights are off?
id really like to know what would solve this thankyou.
