does anyone know if it is a big deal to convert an SDI engine to a TDI VE version(not the PD of course)? Do the parts retro fit such as the manifolds and oil cooling parts? or is the whole block not designed for a turbo and its boost?
or are the TDIs a direct fit in a polo SDI? or do the mountings need to change?

Re: SDI to TDI conversion?
SDIs are not designed for boost. They have a completely different compression ratio and a longer stroke just for starters
Re: SDI to TDI conversion?
ahh thought so ... so would a TDI VE be a direct swap with an sdi? would be great to have a 1.9l tdi in a 6n2

Re: SDI to TDI conversion?
I've been dreaming of this for a while ... except mine isn't an SDI, just a D... whatever difference there is I don't know but apparently it deserves a separate page in the handbook to highlight that it exists.
If you do it I'll follow suit

Re: SDI to TDI conversion?
Nigel - if yours isnt a TDI, then it must be an SDI as these were the only two options offered in the 6n2 variant
D models were a 6N idealism and came in 1.9 varieties only

Re: SDI to TDI conversion?
first I'll have to get my hands on a 6n2 SDI then when I have the funds buy the TDI engine and then do the work :p ... that is if I do not buy a golf mk4 TDI instead of the polonigelelliott394 wrote:If you do it I'll follow suit

Re: SDI to TDI conversion?
I've always been confused about that but it's in the handbook as 1.9D.. I get the feeling it was a very early model of 6n2 which shared the same engine from the 6n era perhaps? Not sure but I'll get a picture of the sticker in the bootalexperkins wrote:Nigel - if yours isnt a TDI, then it must be an SDI as these were the only two options offered in the 6n2 variant

Re: SDI to TDI conversion?
In a similar vein - I think that my 2003 SDi 1.9 Polo needs a replacement direct fuel pump. Can I use one fitted to Golf TDi's as there are more plentiful breaker cars in my area?
