hi all whats the biggest alloys that will good without having to lower the car?
will be on a 1.4 SE car

was thinking either 15s or 16s only if wont look like a tractor

This is what mine looks like stock with the stock 15" Melbourne wheels



It's 15mm lower than standard due to being Sport trim, but gives you an idea of what 15 inchers look like. 15mm isn't that much.

Here's one of mine on 15" wheels and standard suspension. Anything more on standard suspension can look a bit like a tractor IMO. The 14" standard ones look a bit daft as well.

Well I don’t think mine looks like a tractor and only the back can be lowered or the front will rub…35 tyres are so thin it looks as if the rubber is painted on …I did try a 40 tyre but that! did make it look like a tractor…all in all 18s are possible if they are good quality or the first pothole you hit will crack the rim

Disagree, I think 16"s on standard suspension (not even the -15mm that Ash is running as is standard on "sport" models) looks good. Any bigger and u get into tractor territory.......



EDIT: By the way these are my 16" Monza's as found on the 9n3 GTI

16s don't look bad tbh at "stock" (ie, proper stock, not fake stock like some people ) ride height. I think that's the first time I've seen a proper side on shot of one.

I think tyre profile also plays a role in this. I think my car looks deceptively lower than it is, probably due to 195 55 15 tyres that are on it. They're a tiny bit bigger than 205 45 16 and hence fill the arch up a bit more if you get what I mean.

Strangely, the sticker on the fuel cap says either 195 55 15 or 195 50 15 is acceptable, even though there's quite a bit of difference. Plan on trying the latter next...Uniroyal Rainsport 2 for £36 a corner

thanks for your pics and thoughts guys! the Melbourne wheels look good, however the Montreals look better however they are 16s

I find that Monzas are a bit deceptive - because of their design they fill the arches well and therefore look pretty good regardless of drop. Jamie's car shows just how good they can be.

I personally think that alloys with more conventional spokes sometimes let a bit too much space show behind the wheel, which makes them look a bit lost unless they have a bit of a drop on them. VAG stuff is usually ok, but aftermarket wheels can look rubbish as 16" on standard springs. Since getting a 15mm drop on mine I've noticed how high the rear was on the standard suspension, even though the front doesn't show much of a difference. Put some masking tape around the tyre to mock up a 16" wheel on the car and have a look from a distance. Best way to tell what you think looks good without actually fitting any wheels.

Only my opinion of course, and I know that others disagree, but how boring would it be if we all agreed on everything lol.
