EGR Valve ECU Problems

Hi,
I've owned my 52 plate 1.2 Polo for the past 3 months. After 2 weeks the emissions light came on. It turned out it was the EGR valve amongst other bits and bobs that the computer was throwing up, ie., temperature coolant sensor, O2 valve. These were all replaced, ie., EGR valve, O2 sensor, coolant sensor. But....since the EGR valve was replaced I've had rough idle on start up. After about 10 seconds of having your foot on the throttle on the accelerator after start up it sorts itself out but idle is a bit high. If it were to die out the same problems start, i.e. have to put foot on throttle for about 10 seconds again until it sorts itself out..not ideal if you stall at traffic lights.
Garage said I should have ECU reconditioned. I paid to have this done but problem still persists. They tried putting new throttle in but that didn't help. They have tried a clone ECU as well but that still resulted in the rough idle at start up. Basically, the garage told me I'd have to have an open cheque book to try and sort the problem which obviously I don't have. The upshot is that they had to disconnect the EGR valve whereupon the car runs fine but at the end of the day I've still got a light showing on my dashboard which is a pain the ar$e. Any help on how to resolve this issue is massively appreciated. I've already spent upwards of £1,000 to try and sort
I'm a complete newbie (and female) so please explain things as plainly as you can but really any help is appreciated. At whits end but haven't got the budget to throw much else at this lovely little car
