GTI Replacement Intercooler

A recent comparison of tuner cars vs a stock standard Focus RS revealed an interesting statistic on the charge temps of the new GTI motor. APR here in australia has developed a stage 1 tune and stage 2 tune, the stage 2 includes an intercooler that is 50% bigger than the weeny stock one. Why?

Intake charge temps out of the supercharger were showing as 80 degrees celsius??!! The increased cooler size reduced this to a healthier 40 degrees, even with the stage 2 map. My question:

Has anyone here been able to compare the cooler with a Seat one yet, if so, are there after market seat coolers already available?

Interesting findings. How reliable is this info? 80 degrees celcius is not joke, where is this source of heat from?

Well, that depends on your opinion of APR but this was published in one of Australia's most reputable performance car magazines so if they're telling fibs then they have set themselves up for a huge legality-based fall if they are proven wrong. The apparent source of the high charge temps are from the supercharger, the temp readings were taken on the cold side of the stock intercooler which brings me back to the original question posed....

Maybe the magazine misprinted the temp readings? I guess only way is to send APR an email to clarify. Usually, the tuners use a heat shielding manifold gasket made up of a engineering plastic to reduce the temp to the supercharger or intake manifold. I wonder if this would have helped the Polo GTi?

The cheaper option would to spray the intercoler with a super conducting coating to remove heat at a faster rate.

Lets see what other inputs we can get with this issue. Ty

I guess that's on option, but would it work out cheaper than just putting on the bigger cooler? They effectively doubled the cooling surface area and it seemed to work.....
