Oil Filler Cap Gunge

I've just bought a Mk4 polo as a runaround and despite a very pleasing testdrive I am gradually discovering some issues! I have just opened up the filler cap and discovered it is coated with creamy brown coloured gunge (see picture if I can get it to post). I realise this is not good, but how bad is it and what is the likely cause?
Thanks
Chris

Just to add there appears to be no oil sprayed around the engine bay or rocker cover. The oil from the dipstick seems black and normal. I have not noticed any blue smoke etc and there is certainly no loss of power. The only sign of a potential problem is the gunge on the filler cap.
Cheers
Chris

Take it for a good drive on the motorway or similar. That should flush it through
