Brake pad light has just pinged on, me and a mate are going to change them this week have got EBC green stuff pads, but I havent fitted new brake pads or fiddled around with brakes that much any tips or tricks to changing them?

Need to replace the brakes on my GTi as well and any tips/pointers would be appreciated.

buy the largest pair of water pump pliers you can find or a G clamp for retracting the front caliper pistons and copper slip.

then all you need is a basic set of sockets and ratchet. undo caliper from carrier, old pads will fall out, if your old pads are really shot you need to open brake reservoir in engine bay and get the water pump grips on the caliper slowly drawing them back into caliper. close reservoir lid. copper slip the pads up (not the sides that come into contact with the disk obviously!!!) re insert pads, bolt up caliper as removed. start car and press brake a few time then bed the pads in as usual.

Rears wind in with a special tool.

When you say "rears wind in with special tool",how can this be? I thought the winding/rotating was just to "loosen" the piston seal,are there any threaded parts in there?

Its a twist caliper, meaning it needs to be twisted while compressed to retract, better off buying the specific tool for it as they are cheap and its not easy to do without

x2 lost of messing about involved if you dont have the tool!

cheers for the replies guys! and Ive fitted my pads this morning easier than I thought with the help of mate, start the car up and press the brake pedal in a few times and the light won't go off....
is this something I need to go to the dealers with ??
The pads have just been fitted sensor all connected and I dont know why the lights still on ??

Sorry to hijack this thread again, but is this tool a specific one or just a generic calliper rewind tool? Not sure if some of the generic ones twist the piston as well as retract it...

If you ebay vw brake caliper tool it will come up with the right one, worth every penny if when your mates need i doing you charge them a tenner
