Electrical problem - bad door sensor?

hello everybody, this is my first post on the forum. 
my car is a 9n3 GTi.
I have a problem with the drivers side door (left hand drive) - when I open the door the central light does not turn on (the passenger door works fine).
when I try to lock the doors from inside the car, the passenger lock is fine, and the drivers door locks fine but immediately unlocks itself.
from my understanding something is off with the sensor as the car never "realizes" the door is open.
anybody had a similar problem?
