knackered/grinding diff 9n3 gti

hello folks,
bit of a strange on this but looking for some help/info
had a grinding noise coming from the front left wheel, suspected the bearing so gave it to my mechanic and he set about changing the bearing, easy job you mightthink but NO!!
after a bit of a strugle finally got the bearing done (think the cv joint was stuck in the hub carrier) built it all back up and noise still there, so changed the back bearing
noise still there!!!!!! all brand new parts fitted so not worried there, what has now came up in conversation is that the diff/gearbox might be on its way out
not good.
has anyone else heard anything like this???
ive done the usual searches on google and seen there was a recall of the 9n3 gti due to poor gearbox oil but nothing else
so far its cost me lots of money replacing parts i didnt need to replace and i might be looking at another big bill for the next repair so looking to explore every avenue first before i tell him to go ahead.
the cars running stage 2 putting out about 200-210 bhp
any help/info guys and gals would be apperciated
cheers
