Steering wheel twitch when changing gear

Hi all

The girlfriend's GTI has just developed a nasty twitch in the steering steering when changing gear. Although I haven't jacked it up to confirm, I personally suspect it's a shot gearbox mount, which I believe is a common fault on these cars?

If I hold the car on the parking brake and come on / off the clutch in first and reverse, I can feel a clunk in the body and steering. Would this confirm it's the mount?

Are there any uprated mounts around that don't transmit any vibration into the cabin?

Thanks

I was wrong! It's not the gearbox mount.

Yes. That is the steering gaiter you can see through the hole where rubber would normally be

The wishbone has about an inch of movement. No wonder the steering pulled hard to the left, we thought it was tracking!

Was there a recall for wishbone bushes as I wouldn't expect catastrophic failure like that at 60K miles? Do we have a leg to stand on warranty wise? It's an 06 plate, so probably not :(

When was the car last serviced? I'd have thought that something like that should have been picked up on pretty quickly... Worth a shot at getting the dealer to sort it FOC anyway. Can't hurt to try!

You'd think so wouldn't you. I just think some mechanics get a case of boneidleitis when it comes to getting the spanners out.

Sorry, I didn't realise this topic had been covered in-depth already, but I just replaced the complete consoles in the end. Life is too short to be faffing around cutting and shutting new bushes into old consoles.

The missus wanted standard voided bushes. It's her car so I had to respect her decision but I now have 2 spare consoles to fit the Cupra bushes to at my leisure :D

I've never seen bush wear like this happen so quickly on *any* car. And I've owned quite a few!
