Extortionate costs!

I myself own a Leon Cupra, but t'other arf is the proud owner of a 3-pot Polo (the new one with the twin lights). I was wondering if I could enlist the help of some fellow VAG owners.
When she bought it she was attracted to the 20k service intervals. However, she bought it 6 months ago with 5k on the clock, it has now done 8. A light has just appeared on the dash every time she starts up, accompanied by a "bing"
. Having spoken to the garage where she bought it (names omitted to protect the innocent) they have said that it is telling you the car needs a service
the chap then proceeded to tell me about sensors in the sump etc etc, all of which I accept, until he said they would charge £240 for the privelige!?!?!?!?
Surely not!? He said something about an inspection service where they check the levels, lights blah blah etc etc, but only a few moments earlier he told me it's the engine telling me the oil needs changing!? wtf!
Has any one else got any experience of blatant extortion like this?
I can get my Leon serviced (10k AND 20k) cheaper!
Sorry for coming here and having a rant like this, but I'm a little peeved to say the least
