gearbox issues

i have a 9n polo and since i bought it it has been a bit of a pain to get into 5th and the springs that make the gearlevel pop back into between 3 and 4 have never been there,
recently i have completely lost 1st which makes hill starts a HUGE pain i have been told by my local garage that the code for my gearbox is FQE but i cant find that on my gear box ill have to go and check and post later what it says but i cant find fqe anywhere
its a 1.2 65bhp petrol manual 02-05 polo
