Starting problems

Bit of a hybrid this car ....
Model: Jan 2001 Polo estate 6N1 / 6N2. MkIV with a MkV interior.
Engine: 1.4 16v 75bhp
Engine No: APE121978
When I turn the ignition key to start the car, sometimes it turns the engine and starts OK and other times, it does nothing.
When it decides to do nothing, there's no clicks or anything to indicate that the solonoid is sticking.
From studying the Haynes book of lies and searching on the WWW, all I can think of is an intermittant fault with either the starter solonoid, ignition switch wiring connection, or a wiring connection somewhere between the two.
I have to admit that it's starting to annoy me, as the problem appears completely at random and can sometimes be OK for a few engine starts, then not work for the next 10 turns of the ignition key.
I'm also aware that both jobs (removing the starter motor and removing the ignition switch) are equally as bad as each other, so I don't want to tackle one, only to find that it's not that at all, but the other one
Any suggestions or previous experiences with answers, will be greatly appreciated.
