Hi there everyone, I've already spoken to a few members on here but never really introduced myself properly. My name is Chris, I'm a student and live in Edinburgh.

I passed my test early 2011 and bought my first car that June, a black 1.2 Polo 9N! At first I had real issues with the car, the engine vibrated like something out of a sex shop and the poor wee thing had barely any power (it felt like driving a 0.7L car... ). After I had the car looked over, it turned out that the guy I had bought it from had basically lied through his teeth to sell me a broken car needing lots of repairs, £1200 worth to be exact (including nasty labour costs!). The car is now fixed up very nicely and runs like new although it has slight body damage to the front bumper and grill (some moron crashed into it at night while I was asleep).

I have made very minor modifications to the car so far: bee sting arial, pressed plates, mudflaps, 9N3 rear lights (soon to be very very lightly smoked) and colour coded the centre on the rear badge. However, being a student with a £1200 repair bill to pay off, I don't have very much money at the moment so progress will be fairly slow for a while. My future plans include the following:

colour code bumper strips/mirror covers
coilovers
BBS RS-style alloys (waaay to skint for real ones!)
de-locked boot handle
gti/dual-pipe back box/tip
windows tinted
Replace the front bumper + grill
Very very light smoke on headlights

I quickly made this mock-up image to show roughly what I'd like the car to look like when it's finished.



What do you guys think?

Plans sound good. The combination of those little mods will make a huge impact. How bad's the damage on the bumper and grille?

And dare I ask what the hell was wrong with it? You could buy a higher mileage 1.2 9n for the £1200 you spent on getting yours fixed! The way you described it suggests it may have only been running on two cylinders.

The damage to the bumper isn't huge, it's very slightly cracked and the clips that hold it to the car have split off on the drivers' side. The grill is cracked almost in half and the vw badge pops out (and occasionally flies off at 500mph) when I close the bonnet down! The engine was indeed running on 2 cylinders, I decided that having already spent enough money on buying and insuring the car, that £1200 was worth it. I'll be keeping the car until I'm 21/22, by which time I can hopefully afford a mk5 Golf GTi

I've no idea in which order to complete the modofications, I've seen chavs/neds driving about with standard height cars with tinted windows and/or new alloys and they look fairly ridiculous!

I'd get the bodywork sorted out first, nothing looks dafter than a car with ruined panels but lowered and with aftermarket alloys. There's a bloke with a seriously modded 6N somewhere near me with huge areas of clearcoat flaked off, looks absolutely ridiculous. The rest of the stuff you can do whenever, but coilovers and wheels are the major visual things that should be done around the same time if the car is at standard height at the moment.

Think he may have been going for the rat look, but went a bit too far

Speaking of which, I'm tempted to get a tatty Fabia / Ibiza TDI as a beater. Leave the steel wheels on but sort the suspension out and get 200 horses out of it.
