Ok so the sun was out today so I finaly got round to doing the brakes on my TDI. New slotted and drilled discs and pads all round, using GTI calipers, carriers and discs on the front, then changed the fluid to some lovey clean DOT5.1.

Now the thing is, Im still not that impressed with the brakes. They definitely grab better than the original ones but still not great. Ive had a lot of cars with amazing brakes over the years and the Polo weighs nothing so it shoulnt take too much to pull it up in no time. Ive got some G60 carriers and discs to go on when I change to larger wheels, and I think Im going to put braided hoses on. So next option is the master cylinder. Does anyone know what upgrades are a direct fit as I dont want to mess around having to make up new brake lines. Im thinking maybe Golf GTI or VR6. Also would I need to change the vacuum servo unit as well or just the master cylinder??

Pretty sure Audi S2 ones fit (GTis at least), but good luck finding one!

There's a couple of VR6 ones on eBay, that fit the S2, but not sure if they're an upgrade or not.

Just fit a 22.2 from a GTI, then again what did the TDI come with ?

Im fairly sure that the TDI already has the 22.2
Looking on vagcat most models with ABS had this. It also mentions a 23.8 that came on models with ESP, so there wont be many of those around. I know golf IVs take a 23.8 but wasnt sure if it would be a straight swop.

If your brakes aren't awesome then something is seriously wrong.

Have you bled them properly?

Have you bled the abs pump through vagcom?

I had the 256's and they were okay but there was a fair amount of brake fade at higher speeds, then I went for the 280 conversion and they were fantastic.

I've got 256's on my daily loop TDI and they're good, Brembo max discs and drums at the back.

Theres nothing wrong with them, Im just used to alot more stopping power from my other cars. I bought the Polo as a cheap commuting car and its turned into a bit of a project. My other car is a Merc E55 AMG. That is a car with serious stopping power, 360mm discs and 6 pot callipers on the front and 330mm discs and four pot callipers on the rear!
I guess the Polo will never feel as good as that but I was just after abit more. Maybe Ill change my mind a bit when the G60 brakes and braided hoses go on. On the plus side the Polo gets over 70mpg on a good run as where Im lucky if the Merc returns 21mpg!

I've got a VR cab and it's got the 288 ATE calipers and they're immense, even compared to the Polos, but 6 pot 320's would be something else again.
