Milky Headlight

Hi all.
Went out to my car last night n driving home thought a mainbeam bulb had gone so had alook. Bulb ok but headlight lens was a milky white colour! Not condensation just looked like someone had used a solvent on it to clean it. Also the protector was broken. If something has hit the light could it have caused the light lens to discolour like this?
Is it fixable or will I need to replace the headlight unit.
BTW its a 2004 polo with the bug eye headlights.
Cheers
