Hey everyone,

I'm biting the bullet soon and getting my rear bumper fixed and resprayed (there's a small crack in the back, and also scraps near the wheel arch where someone hit me while reversing out of a parking space and didn't even leave a note to say. . probably gonna cost me £300+ so I'm thinking about getting some other things done that are annoying me.

My drum brakes are RUSTY AS ANYTHING and so I want to get new ones like it's just out of the show room so they won't rust (weird how they aren't coated in anti rust paint :S

Don't know but if you can't you can always spray them with high temp paint before fitting...

These 'shells' are actually part of the brake assembly - there are brake shoes inside the drum which press on the inside surface to provide the braking force. To replace them as you suggest would solve the rust problem but involves you effectively replacing the brake drums with new ones. If they aren't worn (which they probably aren't) then it isn't particularly cost effective since the same thing will probably happen again.

You're better off spraying them black or silver. You can use a brush but I personally think that you get a better finish when sprayed for not much more effort. Dead easy, just need to take them off (so back of the car on axle stands) use a wire brush to remove most of the surface rust and then spray with something like Hammerite Direct-To-Rust. No real need for high-temp paint as they don't really do enough to get hot enough to warrant it. Only thing to be careful of is to not get any paint on the machined surface which the alloy is in contact with. Just mask it over to protect from the worst and use a blade/paint scraper to remove any excess.

Can I use a pad to scrape off all the loose rust and then spray paint the entire thing (putting masking tape over the bit that connects to the alloy) while both wheels are off but the drums are still on the car? Would probably get fun metal grey fr halfords or something as that's the original colour

If you're going to do it on the car, use a brush. Otherwise overspray will go everywhere and you won't get a particularly good finish either. Using a brush will be much neater mate.

Thanks a lot lad. Got my bumper repair prices (wheel arch scratches where arseholes hit you while getting in and out of spaces). . .a crack on the bottom. . .yellow paint from other careless cars and all fixed for £200 which was much less than expected so DEFINITELY going to paint the drums .

Gonna use a brush too. Will also be easier to avoid painting the bit that sticks on to the alloy too

Got a wee sneaky question.

9N3's come with a dark grey drum paint. . .but Halfords only do silver (which I don't think would suit pearl black which is what I have). . .do you think Black would suit? Or would the clear difference in black shades ruin the car :S I'm not sure what to do

I used the Hammerite Smooth Direct-To-Rust black paint on mine when I had drum brakes. Preferred it to silver as it made them less obvious to look at. No point showing off that you have drums lol. I had a black car as well - it's not body colour obviously but looks fine as the alloy covers most of it anyway... regardless, all the other plastics on the car are a different finish and they look fine. I wouldn't worry about it mate.
