Crunching when shifting to 2nd with high RPM (2006 9N3 GTi)

I've just purchased a Polo GTi and am loving it so far.
I have a problem, however, when shifting from 1st to 2nd at relatively high revs (about mid-range). Before I even have a chance to engage 2nd, the gearbox makes a metal crunching sound and the gear stick fights with me to stay in place.
Any ideas what could be causing this? The general consensus from my searching looks to be the synchromesh for 2nd gear, which doesn't seem like a cheap thing to fix.

Is this a 56 or 06 plate?
Common issue with the syncro.
Uprating the dog bone bush sometimes helps failing this it is defo the syncro.

This happend to me 2007 dog wish didny really help not looked into fixing it yet maybe 6 speed check out 9n3turbos thread

this has happened to me ever since i got the car i haven't looked into it yet also makes a weird reverse noise

It's a 56 plate. Could the synchro still be to blame if the problem is intermittent?

I hear a similar noise sometimes when selecting reverse too. I think this may be due to there being no mesh for reverse. Selecting it slowly seems to do the trick. It's a bit embarrassing otherwise!

Just a quick update: It was the synchro at fault. The total cost of repair was around £600 and the time in garage was 2 days. Fortunately the trader I bought the car from paid the bill.
