Just bought 2001 Polo 6N2 1.4 TDI (AMF) Engine code, Car is great apart from weird gearbox ratios. Gearbox sticker states EXB Code for gearbox and on top of gearbox(shifter tower) it does state EXB... BUT the ratios are pants. 3000rpm in fifth gear im doing 53mph(checked with sat nav and speedo is correct). Could some one give me the correct ratios, as i think some one may have put a petrol gearbox in my diesel polo before my ownership.

3000rpm in 5th = 53mph
4000rpm in 5th = 72mph
4500rpm in 5th = 81mph

Now the car's top speed should be 108mph but start of red line is 4500rpm.

Can i just change the 5th gear or would i be better in changing the box??

and advice or pointers woulkd be good??

Something is certainly wrong there, you could possibly have the SDI gear ratio's instead of the TDI PD correct gear ratio's.
I drive my Dad's 1.4TDI 6N2 and in 5th Gear on the Motorway doing 80/85mph it should be at around 3000rpm and not 4500

Your right top end is not far over a tonne and doing that it will be at the redline, I think you should take it to a Gearbox specialist ASAP and get it refurbished with the correct ratio's. I bet the car is drinking fuel at the moment and it wont be doing the turbo much good revving that high at normal road speeds.

Seen 2004 9N EXB gearbox on ebay..... Will this fit my 2001 6N2??

My car should come with EXB Gearbox, so i guessing its just a straight swap...Anyone with words of wisdom!!

Box Now fixed, one of the previous owners had swapped all the ratios for petrol version, which made for a very noisy car at motorway speeds.
