A good day for the GTI

On my travels into Bolton this morning to go and look at alloys, had a corsa vxr pull out in front of me at a junction. I thought... good test for the new remap, anyways, he gives it what for from the round about and off down the bypass to both our surprise my little polo gti sailed past him pulling further and further away.

Abit further down another road up pulls behind me a blue corsa vxr  off we pop from standing start off down a dual 60 road my car killed it I was completely shocked and so was he. I pulled that much distance that I let off the power and made it through the lights before they changed on him. At the next set of lights I was waiting on red I can see the vxr booting it down towards me, just before he gets to the lights they turn to green. full blown race launch off I go accelerating and matching his speed and then pulling away before his bumper could pass mine gob smacked :o he followed me until I stopped and asked me what I had done to it? Made my day :D

In no way did I think the polo was slow but it shocked me a bit today what a difference the remap had made! and then to add to it on the way home from the miss’s I had a good blast up to 60 against a civic type r with nothing much in it I was just pulling away with gear changes  .

All in all a good day and put a big smile on my face making me want to do more

Polo GTI's are very good of the line but I would say it was more down to poor/inexperienced driving from the driver of the VXR rather than the GTI being far superior.

Don’t get me wrong I’m no Vauxhall fan but those little VXR's are very quick out of the box, I would expect a mapped GTI to edge it by maybe by a car length but if it was as convincing as you stated then that makes me believe the Corsa driver was a little suspect.

Which Type R did you have a go against? Was it the older EP3 model or the newer FN2?
Again I wouldn’t expect there to be much in it against a mapped GTI because the power to weight ratio's would be basically identical

I have experianced the same vs Corsa VXR's with my stage 1.

From what I have seen/read there not all that they are talked up to be really :o

Just been reading through the performance figures of the VXR and they are heavier than I thought, something like 189bhp but they weigh 1240 KG's which is quite heavy for a small hatchback.

Comparing a modified car vs a standard car isn't really fair though but it is pleasing to see the improvements of a re-map when you come up against something similar.
Volskwagen intentionally under powered the Polo to ensure the Golf got the limelight which is a shame but its a performance chain of command found with every car manufacturer, same applies with the Corsa VXR & Astra VXR etc

I can proudly say, I have raced a vxr uphill in a standard polo gti and my fourth gear was stronger. At fourth gear I was pulling more, the fella had to downshift and cheeky git pulled onto my lane
Although the fella had a head start :D Dunno if the driver was inexperienced but surely was really trying hard.

My mate used to av a corsa Vxr and my car with Amd map & full milltek was way too much for it. Pulled away each gear change and his was a 09 plate against my 07 plate. Think they r pretty poor tbh. I suppose u get bad and good examples but that's me experience lol

I dont think it came down to experience tbh. we both went on green and i literally just pulled away with more power :D

I know it isnt fair to compare standard vs tuned but i figured our bhp would be about the same and was really impressed with the outcome as I had always thought the corsa vxr was a quick motor. There was a massive distance between us and it wasnt the latest shape type r it was the shape before.

Impressed with my car so thought I'd share my experience :D :D

Has anybody tested their stage 1 or stage 2 GTI's against a MK5/MK6 Golf GTI?
That would be an interesting duel, power to weight ratio would be in the Polo's favour

I assume that the VXR you guys are talking about here in SA are called Corsa OPC's - my experience with them is that when i had a bog standard Pgti they use to give me carrots from the word go.
But remap and supporting mods really brings the pgti alive - and then it's really down to driver skill, luckly i could test with my mate who has one and when we have a go with me driving my car i win him and when we have a go with me driving his car i win him, which means there ain't much in it other than driver skill

Also i think you guys have waaaay better software developers around than us here.

But yeah good run

Impressive :) The 9N3 GTI's seem to have immense traction off the line

VXR/OPC Corsa's are not that fast at all.
i raced one in ciney with my full stock GTI and i still nailed it... specially off the line they are slower because of their gearbox ratio's wich are to short.
so they can't get traction down verry well... they are better in rolling starts, but nothing spectacular

as for the rest, i have stage II polo GTI an i did test against Golf V and VI GTI with remap.
both could not keep up with the polo, not even a bit!

tell you something, i have friends with a Leon Cupra R, remapped to 302Hp.
and the other one has a Renault Megane RS Trophy, also remapped to 297Hp and 443nM.
the cupra is equally as fast as my GTI, and i mean exaxly as fast, from rolling start 2nd gear all they way to topspeed.
from a standstill i nail him with 2-3 carlengths.
the megane trophy is a bit slower, i pull away 1 carlength on it and after that it stays the same.
only from 4th to 5th gear he comes passed for a moment, because he is allready in 5th when i'm going from 4-5.
for about 10sec it stays the same again with advantage for the megane, but then he needs to go to 6th gear and i again pass him
but the megane is faster from standstill as the cupra, it can keep up with the polo as his front bumper is at my rear bumper.
those cars are pretty good competition for a stage II GTI.
also tested against a Astra VXR with 310Hp, he also was equally as fast as the polo, on torque i have better and faster spool up so i can get a nose in front but then it stays the same, also tested from standstill up to 150-160km/u and it was the same, polo a nose in front.
i really want to test against the Focus RS, there are driving about 6-7 of them in my town and also a RS500, allways spot them on other side of the road
but i allready know what the outcome will be also   (RS500 will be a step to high on the ladder, those will be faster as me, pretty sure...)
