Different exhausts i think

I also tried putting the Polo GTI exhasut on my 1.4 TDI i couldnt get it to fit and neither could the garage.. Crap thing is i went and bought the rear GTI lip spoiler which has the cut out and now you can see the crappy stock exhaust :(

I have a gti back box fitted to my 9n 1.4 tdi. there is a difference in diameter of half a mm this was easily over come by cutting two small slits in the connecting gti rear box which allowed the pipe to go over my original pipe. I then used exhaust putty to seal and a u clip to keep it in position no problems and it looks the part.
