polo 6n2 excessive fuel consumption

Hi just new to the forum and looking for some advice I have a 2000 6n2 1.4s the problems are as follows temp gauge goes up to normal then drops to 0 ,engine cuts out at junctions when engine is warm, excessive fuel consumption down to as little as 19 MPG! Any ideas would be much appreciated

Your coolant temperature sensor has failed - get it changed and the problem should go away

Thanks Alex Perkins all get it changed as soon as, its driving me nut's is this a common problem?
