Which Polo/Engine to get? (Cheap/reliable daily)

Hey there,

Upon selling my lovely 6n2 GTI and buying a 182 clio, I need to go back to 'cheap' motoring. I really fancy another Polo but a 9N perhaps, I'm after a cheap runner but reliability is the key.

Just wondering what engine variants in the 9n are best for value and reliability?

Or any other Polo's which are bombproof?

I've heard a few horror stories about the 1.2 3 cylinder engines failing, does this make the 1.4 Tdi a better choice?

I also plan on a few mods but mainly OEM+ like BBS rw wheels, lows, bluemotion grill, de-badge etc.

Any help would be ace :),

Ash

I can vouch for the 1.9tdi. Used across the VAG range its reliability is legendary. Its one of the main reasons i bought one. Economy isnt too bad either :)

The 1.2 3-cyl is OK if you're nice to it. The problem is, in order to actually, you know, move, you can't be nice to it. It's also horrible on fuel on the motorway. I think the 1.4 TDI is just the 1.9 with a cylinder cut off?

Hello.

I sold my Clio 182 to buy a Polo 9N3 in June last year. Basically doing 90 or so miles a day in the 182 was hurting my wallet so bought a diesel. Mine is a 2009 1.4 TDI Match - slow and boring coming from a 182 but if you want to save money it works. Any questions fire away.

The 1.4 16v has always been pretty decent in my opinion :)
