ive got a suspected alternator problem and am on the case, ive been told today by a former vw senior tech that the plug with two wires which tell the onboard power system thats its charging going from the alternator to somewhere around the battery are known to corrode and crumble. im going to check all this tomorrow by taking a reading straight from that plug to see if its putting out therefore eliminating either wires or alternator as the fault but just wondering if theres anyone on here whos had the same or similar problem.
cheers

What makes you think the alternator is going?
I have just replaced mine last week! It was making a whining noise which increased with revs it sounded engine related but it was the alternator!
Battery light also flashed during high revs!
Hope this helps.

Well I've had a wining for a while but put it down to the belt as it was looking pretty tired but the battery light is on and battery going flat and not charging and bringing on every light on the dash and loosing lights, wipers dash lights, power steering then eventually it cutting out so tried another battery on and everything was as normal except the battery light is still on. Charged the original battery and drop tested it and its good. Then used battery tester with car running and it was showing 11.4v not charging so it's either alternator or wiring. Thanks for the reply and if you don't mind me asking how much did you pay for an alternator? And was it genuine part?
Cheers

Hi what milage is your car out of interest?
Mine must have been close to failing then, either that or it was just the belt but i think it was the alternator bearings whining tbh!
Also i considered a genuine one however, i got 3 year warrety on one from our local motor factors came in at £100!
