Gotta change the box in my polo this weekend and I have a gear box off a mpi engine to go on will it fit straight onto the other version of the 1.4 which I think is the dohc? Might sound daft but I'm not to clued up :p

All the gearboxes are the same fitment, however some have different clutches, and each engine size has a different gearing ratio, thus if you use a 1.4 16V box on a 1.0, the acceleration is likely to not be as good as before

You should try use a gearbox from the same engine.

Both the box I'm putting in and my engine is a 1.4 so you think it should fit? I would but I'd rather spend £100 for a box from a friend than £250 for a second hand ebay jobby :p especially on £2.65 an hour XD - thanks mate

Alex, i've herd the TDI gearbox's are more stronger, and better for the GTI lump?

They all have the same fifth gear roller bearing and differential rivets. The only difference is the ratios

Rebuild with a metal fifth gear bearing and replace the diff rivets with titanium bolts and the box would last forever.

oh right thanks alex, the gear box looks newer than the engine, from the colour of it.

Now its out, i was going to fit a new clutch, belts so i don't regret it later.

I guess i can strip it and see what has been done, as it looks like a recon.
