New driver - Just bought a Polo S 1.2l petrol 70 (AC)

Hi all,

So I've had my driving license for 7 years, but have only driven twice since I passed (both in the last two weeks). Yesterday bought a polo S as a cheap run around car, won't be using it too much. I know most of you will frown at this choice because all reviews online tend to say it's a bit slow, and noisy, although, that should be fine for me!

Just wanted to ask if there's anything I should know about the car. Do's and don't do's? Things that tend to go wrong with it?

Also, is it possible to get parking sensors fitted on it because the official vw site doesn't offer it for the S model.

Thanks!

Yes you can get parking sensors fitted. Plenty of aftermarket options that will behave just like factory fitted ones. Either kits for DIY or get a garage to fit them for you.

The 1.2 3-cyl engine has, or had, a reputation for burning valves and having the timing chain jump. I know that the timing chain design was changed at some point (around 2005 I think), and possibly the valve design too. As yours is a 70PS version, it must be vaguely recent, so it should be OK. I've got a 2002 Polo with what is effectively the same engine (although mine is an early one with 65PS) and it's done 135,000 miles and is fine. What I will say is that it isn't exactly efficient on the motorway...
