I have a 2001 Polo SDI which has the airbag light on since I got it last year. I checked the clock spring and that seemed OK so I took it to a man who plugged it in and it gave the following fault code:

00588 Airbag Igniter Driver Side(N95) 32-10-Resistance too high intermittent.

He tried resetting it but it stayed the same.

I then measured the resistance from the connector on the steering column, it reads about 2 ohms steady. Doesn't seem to be any seat airbags or wires coming out of the seatbelt pre tensioner.

I set about looking for the control module, I'm still looking, it isn't bolted to the floor under the centre console, not behind the passenger dash, not next to the accelerator, not anywhere it says to look on the internet. Most of the trim is out and I still haven't found it.

Any help would be appreciated, car's too good to scrap for the sake of a light.

The airbag module is located behind the heater controls on the lower dash

I have the lower dash and heater controls removed but can't see anything resembling an airbag module.



I'd appreciate any help, there isn't even a Haynes manual for this year.

The 2000 Polo Haynes manual covers pretty much the entire car, albeit not some of the engine parts but most of the important stuff is covered

The airbag module should be behind that metal support at the bottom of the dash

Airbag igniter - driver's side (N95)

Short to positive

Short to earth

Defective wiring or connections

- Renew defective wiring or connections

Driver's airbag (N95) defective

- Renew driver's airbag (N95)

Coil connector with slip ring (F138) defective

- Renew coil connector with slip ring; for vehicles with ESP, fitted in a housing together with steering angle sender (G85)

- Read measured value block

Thanks for posting the picture Alex but the only thing behind the metal support is plastic heater ducting.

Thanks again Alex, I ripped out the heater ducting and the unit is right at the back under the carpet.

I have a 1.0 polo and have had the same issue with the airbag light. I read to check the wires under the seat but there are none. I plugged it into a diagnostic and no fault codes come up regarding the airbag, just the lambda sensor which I know about. What could the issue be? And how would I solve it?
