Start up problem

My 6n2 gti has became an arse to start. From cold it JUST turns over and then cuts out (fault code - immobliser).

From warm - no prblem at all.

Cold weather is a real killer, even overnight at 5/6c will make it really hard to start -

1st turn hardly anything, 2nd turn clocks go mad and mileage resets on dash etc, 3rd turn it normally fires up.

i posted this before but cannot find the thread to reivew potential causes, so sorry for the duplication.

Battery? immobiliser?

Dan

Have you checked all your earth points from the battery to the body and gearbox? It could just be that or a duff battery. The dash needles having a fit and shaking was a flat battery on my old 6N.

Mileage resetting definately sounds like a duff battery. Cold weather kills batteries, and if yours is on its way out, youll see problems like this.

Hello there, I have the same problem on a 1.4TDI and it happens randomly enough as far as i can tell although possibly less when warm but still does happen. I thought originally it was the starter and had it reconditioned then after the symptoms persisted (although not as bad) the guy that did the starter checked the alternator the battery and then after that said that when I was starting the car there was a spark or reading coming from the engine to the chassis or something indicating an earth problem. So I am going to check the earth connection between battery and starter and the chassis and if I find the source of the problem I shall let you know,
Paul
