Brake knocking noise / disc noise

Not to hijack another thread I thought I would start a new one.

Reading on the other thread it appears a few other people are experiencing the same problems I have been.

My car has been with the dealer for 2 days having an issue diagnosed where when going from forward to reverse and vice versa then applying the brakes I have been getting a loud clunking noise.
Also I have been finding that when pulling away slowly or in traffic I have been getting a resonance / humming noise ( like when you run a wet finger round the rim of a wine glass ) coming from the front. At times it could be very loud.

The dealer has today informed me that the caliper carrier is faulty, and is allowing movement of the caliper itself and the pads when applying the brakes. So they are going to replace this and the brake pads as they'd have some damage from where they have been moving around.

Unfortunately I have to wait a week for the new carrier as the red ones.
Also on the down side they have managed to put a large scratch in the black section of my alloy.

Now mine is a GTI, which shares the same brakes as the Blue GT. are other people with this problem also driving a GTI or GT?

The calliper to suit 288mm and 310mm dia discs is actually a mk5/6 golf part can't recall golf forums raising problems with carriers being incorrectly made but I suppose the supplier could have produced a bad batch. Interestingly 288mm dia discs and 310mm dia discs get the same calliper but with different carriers and different pads. The both callipers for 288mm discs use different carriers but the same pads. The carriers appear to be physically very similar and I wouldn't be surprised if you could interchange and get an apparent fit.

288mm disc = carrier 6R0615125A
310mm disc = carrier 6R0615125B

both use calliper 1K0615123M and 1K0615124M.

There is also
288mm disc = carrier 6R0615125
which uses callipers 1K0615123E and 1K0615124E

Whilst it shouldn't happen putting the smaller disc with a carrier to suit the larger disc would result in excessive run out... a robust production control system should stop this but then again different variants with physically compatible parts on the same line.
Actually something as simple as the wrong spring clip would hold the calliper incorrectly.
