fuel Pump noisyness

Being as I have yet to get a manual, i can only assume the fuel pump is in the back somwhere?
Anyway, when i turn the key to ignition i hear this whirring noise, which is the fuel pump starting no?
and, when the car is running and i come to a stop i still here somewhat of a whirring noise from the back.
how noisy should it be?

You're right. The whirring sound coming from the rear is your electric fuel pump. Its a little difficult to communicate how loud it should be, in text, but really, it should only be a gentle whirring/humming sound. Mine gets a little louder when i'm running very low on fuel.

I thought as much, it's not like real loud, i can just hear it.
bit disturbing after driving a mega quiet golf around.
at least it's no where near as noisy as a mini :lol:

anyone had to buy a new one? how much do they cost?
on GSF there is:

or

Being as my CL is a 1991, which do i use? there doesn't seem to be a '91 fuel pump on there..

I get the whirr when you first turn the key, before the engine starts. While the engine is running, I can't really determine where all the sounds are coming from, apart from the tappets, and the clicking of the fuel filter, so I couldn't tell you how much noise the fuel pump should make, but it doesn't sound a serious problem.

Regarding the pumps, the bottom one ending A could possibly be for GT. I don't know for sure though. That is unless revisions were made to the fuel pump later in the production run.

18389 FUEL PUMP-IN TANK PO 10/90 >7/94

I take it that is the right one?

I might be wrong, but I have a feeling that the mk2 fuel pump was mechanical and then an electric fuel pump was installed on the fuel injected mk3's.. so those first two pumps would be the wrong type entirely if I'm right.

A mk 3 has two electric fuel pumps.
One lift pump in the tank which you can hear prime when the ignition is switched on. An inline pump is located under the car along with the accumulator and fuel filter.
The lift pump is the same for all but the inline pump is different for the NZ, GT and G40 models.

The in-line pump, filter and accumulator are mounted on a bracket behind the driver side rear wheel. If the anti-vibration bolts on the bracket fail (they are just a rubber block glued between two bolts, the glue fails and they fall apart) and the bracket touches the body of the car, the pump noise will be greatly amplified. I dont know how much new A-V bolts cost, mine is lashed up with cable ties, but I suppose it'll need fixed for the MOT.

Have you tried eurocarparts.com for pumps? Their in-tank pumps are around £20, in-line nearer £100.

when i have the seats down but nothing loaded up, you can hear it whirring away quite loudly when you're cruising up the motorway :D

I think they're all noisy...

The Polos I've driven have all had noisy fuel pumps compared to other cars, so don't assume it's faulty just because it's a little loud.

Unless it's really loud or making some irregular noises it's probably normal. I suspect they just sound bad because the Mk3 doesn't have much in the way of soundproofing, especially with an empty boot.

i'd be worried if i didn't hear the front one (injector pressure) going when turning on the ignition, and the rear one doing the constant whirr ("lift"/continual supply circuit) in quiet moments.

even going along, if it failed, it'd be like being on a ferry and the diesels suddenly cut out...... hey..... some constant background noise just stopped... what was it...?!?!
