Polo 1.4 Tdi?

Hey guys,
Just thought I would get some advice on a new polo. I'm thinking of trading in the A3 for a small, more efficient car such as a polo. I quite fancy as diesel and was thinking about the 1.4tdi. Just a few questions though;
being a 3-cylinder are they underpowered at all? my sister has a 1.2 petrol 3-cyl and it wobbles about a lot at tick-over.
Is it very good on fuel?
Are they ok to use over short journeys? maybe 5 miles each way?
What maintenance should i look for (cambelt etc)?
What is the difference between the 70, 75, 80?
Is it worth spending the extra cash on a 1.9 tdi?
If you could answer any of these questions from experience would be really helpful, thanks
