Polo 1.4 AFH engine..What cheap mods to boost performance?

Good afternoon gentlemen:
I recently bought a 1.4L AFH 1997 MKIV VW Polo. The car is in pretty good shape overall and i'm quite happy with it.
However I would like to know what I can do to my engine to boost its performance without increasing the fuel consumption too much (as it is pretty high already).
I am not a mechanics expert but I learn quickly, so thanx for any advice.
