6N2 TDI - bit of help on what to look out for!

Hi All,
About to pull the trigger on a very high mileage 6n2 tdi. Above the ordinary checks is there anything specific you recommend looking out for? Also this is my first diesel, am I supposed to look for any different engine characteristics? e.g. cold starts/idle/smoke
I used to own a 6n2 GTi so I have a similar reference to compare to
