I DON'T BELEIVE IT!!!!!

I was shocked today to find RUST on my MK3. Rust on a mark 3, Impossible!!! I hear you say. As unbeleivable as it sounds, I have found rust on my drivers door!!! , :lol:

Seriously tho, I have mettalic paint and a mate of mine has said that you cannot blend the paint and cut it in like normal paint jobs. He has told me that you need to rub down the entire panel, re-coat the entire panel with the base colour and then re-coat with the laquar. Is this true? or is he talking out of the wrong orifice!!!

Please let me know, with instructions if possible :roll:

not sure about havin to rub down the full panel (i dnt no 2 much about painting) but for it to look any good you will have to respray the full panel. Its s**t havin metallic paint!

i got rust on my drivers door as well, just along where the sill of the window is! never seen it like this b4!

luckily i don't have metallic paint, but i am replacing the whole door! its in an awkward place so woz better to get a second hand door sprayed up, just waiting for the time to put it on!

Mines a pearlescent metallic paint. Try blending and cutting that!

I'm annoyed at the rust in the lower corners of the doors, infront of the wings. I'm gonna get it seen to when I'm mobile. As for what your friend said, its quite possible the whole panel may need doing. With metalics, you can have the exact same paint, and the right lacquer, but it all depends on the pressure used to apply it. If a bodyshop were using a spray gun to spray part of a panel, its very hard for them to adjust the pressure on the spray to give the same finish you see (at least thats what I've been told).

thats exactly where I've got it. Must be a common problem!

well i've found a hole the size of a 1p piece at the bottom of my drives a pillar :shock: dunno how im gonna get it fixed :oops:

its a pain in the arse even with bog standard matt paint! :D

where it's at on mine (and really, where you should expect it because of the construction?) ---
Front wheel arches (rears mysteriously ok - all 4 are dangerzones on any car without arch trim after all)
Couple of random bits on the panelling from neglected stone chips and scratches (previous owners :roll:)
Bottom and rear edges of doors (including a tiny bit round the tailgate and rear lights)
and the bottom halves of the metal strips separating the two bits of glass in the front windows - both of mine are completely wrecked with rust! Inside as well as out :( .... sanded it off, kurusted, zinc primered and topcoated it (even though it was originally plastic trimmed) as best as possible, but its still getting worse)

With the crap sealing job done on the new door i also expect it to go rotten on the inside within a couple years :(

well if you want to totally remove the rust you have to take it back to bare metal really otherwise it will come back

yep.... been doing that on the arches.... made a complete hash of the finish and dont know how to blend it, but its still flat, smooth and rust free.

dont think theres ANY actual metal left of the window divider though. it appears to be "solid" rust! good job its not doing any major loadbearing

Is yours Mettallic paint? and have you tried cutting it in with cutting paste. I'm only asking to try and make sense of the best way to do it :roll:

I've got quite a bit on mine, I've told Karl about this already but I'm going to get the body shop to look into doing mine. The drivers door is terrible where the seal has been put on it's just rusted away. And one of the back arches and some bubbleing.

About the metalic paint, if any of you know optima21 (or Dom) he had a capri green which is kind of dark green ish colour of metalic paint (same colour as mine) and he seemed to have the same problem as me. However he had loads of paint and ended up just re-doing the whole car :roll: .
On mine a whole back pannel looks like its been redone, you can tell where it stops and starts (but i was lookin at it pretty damn hard lol).


My question now is, is it possiable to tone down a colour? Ive asked the body shop to se if they can and the guy said it was (which is quite cool the colours pissing me off).

All I can think they would be able to do is use a cutting compound to blend it better to the rest of the car. Let me know how it goes, and how those Ps look.
