Help My gearbox Sounds Like an aeroplain

on my 6n the gearbox makes sounds in all gears, sounds kinda like an aeroplane when taking off, and sometimes i get a kerning kind of sound,, but stops when in neutral and when clutch is down, showed to a garage and they didnt really know anything they jus said ur gearbox is iffed, which was a great help
anyone have any ideas of what could be wrong??

the end bearings r ussually the weak point

hope its not a stupid suggestion but the oil level in the box is topped up? recent vw gearboxes sometimes slowly leak their "sealed for life" fluid.... which can end up killing them. had any trouble getting 5th?

cheers for the replies,
i aint never checked it and it may be that, at first it was hard to get into any gears especially third but now it has worn in, and changing gear is no problem but it makes that sound instead, u rekon i should get the oil level checked?
