Buying new - what sort of 'discount' to expect?

When I was in talking to the sales person about a Polo BlueGT, and mentioned the word 'discount' I got a little bit of waffle and something about 'Well we won't argue over some carpet mats and mudflaps'...
My wife got a new Volvo V40 last year and we were instantly offered 7.5% off the list price. I guess VW are currently running a £1000 deposit contribution and a years free insurance - can't really argue, though I'm now waiting for the order books and spec to open on the new 2014 models before committing to ordering, so I'm guessing those offers may well have stopped.
Are dealers able to offer any decent discounts off RRP, or are they all going to stick as close to it as possible? I'd quite probably go for PCP over 3 years, then decide if the car is a keeper or a changer.

Quite honestly use an online broker. My local franchise offered £750 off the price when pushed. Through drivethedeal.com I saved £3300 on the list price (this included the £1000 from VW), I was put in touch with a dealer who dealt wih my purchase without the smarm of face to face dealings with salesmen. I can't see any reason why the 'relationship' you build with 'your' dealer is worth £2550. I would recommend DTD to anyone and will use them again.

I negotiated over 3k off a new GTI for a friend a few weeks ago. Easily done. Just aim low with your figures.

You just have to be committed. Walk out and go somewhere else if you don't get what u want off it. You have to be reasonable though. Can't just ask for 5k off and threaten to not give them your custom. I asked for a price 2k lower at first. She said it's highly unlikely but ask her manager anyway. She came back and said best we can do is lifeshine, mats, mudflaps, and servicing. Added to around 900 off. I said round it off to a thousand and it's a deal

As above. I specced the car & accessories I wanted up on drivethedeal.com took the printout in and then got the dealer to match it It was also broadly the same as the What car target price. I was happy with that considering I was part-exing as well which gave a small amount extra off. I told the chap that this was what I was prepared to pay, didn't want finance etc. It didn't take any haggling although he did use the "let me speak to my boss" excuse whilst he had a cheeky fag round the back.I'm not sure if I'd haggled I'd have got any more off because at the time there was a 4 month waiting list.
When getting broker quotes, don't forget that they normally have a reduction factored in for the finance kickback. That's when you buy the car on finance and then decide later to pay it all off after one payment.
Discounts vary on the time of year. If it's coming up to the end of a financial period they will be more keen to shift a few more cars to hit their targets. Buying new for a delivery around plate changing dates is also a bad idea as there are spikes in volume then. If you're flexible on colour & accessories you'll get a bargain from pre-registered or ex-demo stock over a brand new. Especially when new models are launched or the plates change as dealers want to shift older stock.
My local has £8,000 off list on a pre-reg Golf R convertible at the moment. The dealer hinted that for a cash sale a bigger discount was possible.

Cheers, I had looked at the online broker option but wasn't sure on the benefits, seems they can be rather good for pricing!

Depends on the model, the lower end (1.2) have 8% discount and the 1.4, 1.2 TSi, 1.6TDi have a 10% margin. If a dealer is getting a bonus, selling 1.4s or volume bonus yu may get a little extra. Drivethedeal is a good place to start and see if they will match it. With the FL Polo round the corner, the deals on the current spec should be quite good. I got just over a £2500 discount in Dec, for a brand new standard spec 1.4 Polo Match inc £1000 finance deposit allowance.

They told me today that any orders placed now and onward will be the new shape, but as they cannot yet let you configure specs I am unsure - I do wonder if waiting for the next version of the Polo may result in less discount being available but who knows

I picked up a new BlueGT 2 weeks ago with multifunction steering wheel, tinted rear windows, carpet mats, metallic blue silk paint, £30 of fuel for £15999 (including a £1000 Solutions finance contribution which I plan to pay off next month)

I ordered mine last August and it was delivered mid October, the local dealer told me they'd only knock a couple of hundred pounds off, I showed them the drive the deal price and after some lengthy negotiations I got just over £3000 off (Inc £1000 Finance contribution) The radio upgraded to a RCD510, a MFSW, a fourth year warranty and the 3 year service plan thrown in! I told the local dealer that this was what I wanted, if they couldn't match, or better it I had no issues using a internet broker, they caved in and gave me what I wanted!

I think that will be my plan, to be fair I'd rather buy from the dealer direct, but for the price differences around online, I could not justify the difference!

Once my nearest dealer refused to do a deal that was their chance over. I didn't go back begging, they had lost that sale and the garage DTD put me in touch with got closer to their target. The service department will deal with you properly whether or not the car came from there and with a service pack even this doesn't matter.
You still deal with the dealer direct, I had calls from dealers DTD and orangewheels use within 24h of getting quotes.
